RHINOPLASTY - AESTHETIC NASAL SURGERY IN PORTSMOUTH

The nose is the centerpiece of the face; as such, it has the power to either enhance your features or distract from them. A nose that is overly prominent or poorly shaped can take attention away from your eyes, cheekbones, and lips. It can also distort your appearance in photographs because cameras tend to over-emphasize the nose. Rhinoplasty surgery corrects these issues and restores facial balance by creating a beautiful and proportional nasal profile. Rhinoplasty also has several potential medical benefits; this procedure can be used to open the nasal passages and straighten the septum, allowing the patient to breathe freely.

HOW RHINOPLASTY IMPROVES NASAL SHAPE AND FUNCTION

During rhinoplasty surgery, the patient’s nasal bones and cartilage are carefully manipulated with small surgical instruments. As the patient heals from this procedure, his or her nasal bones “set” in a new position, permanently changing the shape of the nose. Rhinoplasty can be used to achieve several cosmetic objectives: It can straighten a crooked nose, reduce the projection of the nasal bridge (i.e. the dorsal hump), or reduce the length of the nasal tip. It can also be used to narrow wide nostrils and slim the tip of the nose if desired. Though most rhinoplasty patients wish to make their nose less prominent, this versatile procedure can also be used to “build up” the nasal bridge to create the desired profile.

COSMETIC RHINOPLASTY AND DERMAL FILLERS

In some cases, dermal fillers may be used alone as a liquid rhinoplasty or to complement the results of aesthetic nasal surgery. Dermal fillers can augment the nasal bridge or refine the nasal tip. Dermal fillers can also soften deep nasolabial folds, making the mid-face region smooth and youthful in appearance. Fillers can also be injected into the chin, increasing its prominence, so it balances out the nose. As a national trainer for both Allergan and Galderma, Dr. Wilson can advise you on how to achieve superior rhinoplasty results using injectable compounds.

During your consultation with Dr. Wilson the potential for dermal fillers will be discussed. Dermal filler treatment of the nose is typically done in two sessions; the initial session where the majority of the treatment is done and second touch up session to further refine results.

HOW IS RHINOPLASTY PERFORMED?

Before their procedure, rhinoplasty patients are sedated with a general anesthetic. This ensures their comfort throughout the surgical process.

Rhinoplasty surgery requires only one external incision, which is made in the columella (the portion of tissue between the nostrils). When the patient has healed, any scar tissue created by this incision will be hidden within the fold below the tip of the nose.

After making an incision in the columella, Dr. Wilson carefully elevates the tip of the patient’s nose. Doing so gives him access to the nasal interior. From there, he can adjust the position of the patient’s nasal bones and cartilage through tiny internal incisions. Sometimes, a small amount of bone or cartilage is removed during this process to reduce the projection of the nose substantially. Once the patient’s nose has been reshaped to reflect his or her preferences, the incision in the columella is closed with sutures. Splints and gauze may also be used to support the nasal bones during the early stages of recovery.

WHAT TO EXPECT DURING RECOVERY FROM A NOSE JOB

Rhinoplasty recovery typically lasts about two weeks, though patients can expect to have their nasal splint removed after one week. Though initial symptoms (like pronounced swelling and discomfort) resolve within five to seven days, bruising and some mild swelling may linger for up to 14 days. During these two weeks, patients should consume soft foods and avoid strenuous exercise. Limiting facial movements is also advised.

The nasal bones remain fragile for up to two months after surgery. Patients must, therefore, be careful to avoid high-contact activities, like spots, for at least six weeks after having a rhinoplasty. Dr. Wilson will let you know when your nose is strong enough for you to resume all your normal activities.

WHO MAKES A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR RHINOPLASTY?

All rhinoplasty candidates should be in good health and be current nonsmokers. Furthermore, the use of certain over the counter medications, like aspirin and ibuprofen, should be avoided for at least two weeks before surgery. NSAID medications can increase your risk of bleeding.

Rhinoplasty candidates must also have realistic expectations for this procedure. Though rhinoplasty surgery can make the nose more aesthetically appealing and proportional, alterations must be made within the limits of the patient’s nasal structure. Rhinoplasty cannot be used to make a large nose into a petite, button nose, for example, but it can greatly reduce the projection of the nose. During your consultation, Dr. Wilson will help you understand how he’ll work with your existing nasal structure to create flattering, natural results.
