WHAT CAUSES A DOUBLE CHIN TO DEVELOP?
There are a number of reasons why certain individuals who are not significantly overweight suffer from submental fullness. A double chin can be inherited; if one of your parents had a receding chin and a tendency to store additional facial fat, you’re more likely to develop the same characteristics. Submental fullness is also a common side effect of the aging process: Though facial fat deposits tend to shrink over time, they also slide steadily downwards. Sometimes, displaced fat deposits clump together on the lower face, accentuating the jowls and causing a double chin to form.
HOW DOES KYBELLA WORK?
Kybella® is currently the only completely non-surgical double chin removal system approved by the FDA. As is the case with most non-surgical procedures, Kybella® does not require the creation of any incisions and patients experience little, if any, discomfort during recovery.
During Kybella® treatment, a number of injections are made below the chin with a very fine needle. These injections deliver the active ingredient in Kybella®: Deoxycholic acid (DA). DA occurs naturally within the human body; it’s produced by the digestive system in order to aid in the breakdown of dietary fats. When injected into submental fat, DA dissolves fatty tissue without harming nearby skin or muscles. This process permanently destroys targeted fat cells; they will not grow back, even if the patient gains a moderate amount of weight after treatment.
Kybella® appointments usually only last for 20 to 30 minutes. However, most patients need to have multiple treatment sessions in order to ensure optimal results. If you have a moderate amount of fat under your chin, you should plan to have between two to three treatments. For more significant submental fullness, you may need up to five treatment sessions. When you come in for a consultation, Dr. Wilson will examine the area under your chin and let you know how many appointments you will require.
WHAT TO EXPECT AFTER HAVING NON-SURGICAL DOUBLE CHIN REMOVAL
Most people who have Kybella® injections are able to return to work immediately. Side effects following this treatment are rare, but they can include localized redness, swelling, numbness, or irritation. In very rare cases, patients have developed sores or facial muscle weakness following Kybella® treatment. If either of these things happens to you, inform your physician or Dr. Wilson promptly. Timely follow-up care will resolve any issues you’re having and ensure a smooth healing process.
Most patients can expect to see their full results manifest after a series of treatments over about three months. Each injection session must be spaced about one month apart, so Kybella® treatment is a gradual process.
WHO MAKES A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR NON-SURGICAL DOUBLE CHIN REMOVAL?
The ideal Kybella® patient is a healthy adult who is within the “normal” BMI range (or close to it). Kybella® treatment is not appropriate for pregnant or nursing mothers. If you take any blood thinning medications, including over the counter NSAID pain relievers, you will need to discontinue them at least two weeks prior to having Kybella®.
Patients are advised to have Kybella® before having any other procedures performed on their face or neck. Having certain cosmetic procedures before Kybella® may increase your risk of complications.
Our team may recommend the use of other non-surgical injectable treatments, like dermal fillers, to complement the results of Kybella®.
