Labiaplasty

Vaginal Rejuvenation in Portsmouth, NH with AW Plastic Surgery

Labiaplasty addresses excess skin of the labia minora and loss of volume in the labia majora. Both of these changes occur during the natural aging process but in some cases, excess skin can occur in younger, pre-menopausal patients. Excess skin of the labia minora can be associated with pain and difficulties with clothing. Patients who undergo labiaplasty often note improvement in not only the appearance of the labia but also comfort in clothing, exercise and intimate activities.

There are multiple techniques to reduce the amount of skin in the labia minora. In the majority of cases skin is removed either in a linear or wedge fashion. The best technique depends on each individual patient and often a combination of techniques is required.

Loss of volume in the labia majora is often corrected with transfer of fat (fat grafting) to the area. This process involves the removal of fat from one area of the body and its transfer to the labia using small syringes and cannulas.

Labiaplasty can be performed as an outpatient surgical procedure.

Post-Operation

Please review our pre and post-operative instructions.

Patients with redundant skin and mucosa of the labia minora are ideal candidates for labiaplasty.  Patients seeking labiaplasty usually complain of pain during intercourse, difficulties with underwear, and pain during exercise. Many patients seek labiaplasty for aesthetic improvement of the labia.

The recovery after labiaplasty is variable and patient specific. In general, most patients can expect two to three days of soreness and mild drainage from the surgical area. Pain is usually easily controlled with over the counter pain medications such as Tylenol and Ibuprofen but additional pain medications are also be provided as back up. The sutures used for this procedure are self-dissolving and do not to be removed. Many patients note the sutures have fully dissolved at 3 weeks. Most patients will feel completely recovered at about one week and back to exercising at two weeks to three weeks. Following surgery patients must refrain from sexual intercourse for at least one month and until all the sutures have dissolved.

Because of the nature of the skin and tissue of the labia the scarring is not usually noticeable in most patients.

Labiaplasty is a component of vaginal rejuvenation. Labiaplasty addresses the external portion of the genitalia, specifically the labia minora. Complete vaginal rejuvenation addresses the internal portion of the vagina and is often done with laser or radiofrequency devices.

Most patients elect to undergo labiaplasty as an office procedure with local anesthesia such as lidocaine. This is almost always well tolerated well. Patients often take pre-medication such as an anti-anxiety medication and pain medication prior to the procedure. In rare instances or when patients are combining labiaplasty with other treatments, general anesthesia may be used.

Sexual partners will notice a difference in the appearance of the labia after this procedure.  Sexual partners may also notice a difference in sensation during intercourse.

In most cases there is no change or, sometimes, an improvement in sensation.

In most cases labiaplasty does not affect the skin around the clitoris. Patients with excessive skin over the clitoris, also known as a clitoral hood, may elect to have this skin removed. During this procedure attention is paid to not injure the underlying clitoris. The need for clitoral hood reduction

Consultation and procedure are not performed the same day. Consultation allows for appropriate assessment of the surgical need and discussion of risks and benefits of the procedure. At the time of consultation pain medications are prescribed so that they are available for the procedure itself.
