What Is a Mommy Makeover?

A mommy makeover is a combination of plastic surgery procedures that slim, tighten, and lift different parts of a woman’s body to restore youthful contours and appearance. The choice of procedures is up to you, and you’ll make those decisions with Dr. Wilson in a personalized consultation.

A mommy makeover typically includes the following.

  • A tummy tuck (abdominoplasty): A surgical procedure to tighten and strengthen abdominal muscles and remove excess belly skin to restore a flat, firm midsection. A tummy tuck not only gives you a sleeker profile, it can improve your posture by reinforcing the muscles of your core. A mini tummy tuck is a version of the procedure that focuses only on the lower abdomen, below the navel.
  • Breast reshaping: A breast lift will raise sagging breasts and reshape them, often combined with breast augmentation or reduction, depending on your needs.
  • Liposuction: Remove pockets of fat that are resistant to diet and exercise. Liposuction can extract excess fat from the abdomen, hips, thighs, buttocks, and other parts of the body.

A mommy makeover can also include other surgical and non-surgical procedures, such as the following.

In your consultation with Dr. Wilson, he’ll discuss the range of possible treatments with you and recommend the combination best suited to your needs.

Am I a Good Candidate for a Mommy Makeover?

If you are uncomfortable with the appearance of your body after having children or gaining and losing a significant amount of weight, you’re probably a good candidate for a mommy makeover. Dr. Wilson can customize the combination of procedures to address your specific needs.

The ideal candidate for a mommy makeover is in good health and at a stable weight at least six months after childbirth or weaning from breastfeeding. You should also be a non-smoker. If you smoke, you will need to quit at least four to six weeks before your surgery and remain smoke-free for at least for to six weeks after your surgery.

It’s best to get a mommy makeover after you are no longer planning to have any more children, as pregnancy can stretch and weaken the muscles in your abdomen, change the size and shape of your breasts, and cause your skin to stretch. If you do expect to have more children after your procedure, bring that up in your consultation with Dr. Wilson.

What Can I Expect in Recovery?

Your recovery will depend on the combination of procedures that you have in your mommy makeover. But the great thing about combining these treatments is that you do all your healing at once, without having to go back for a second procedure and needing another stretch of downtime.

You will need to take a least a week, and possibly two, away from your normal activities after your surgery. Plan to have someone to help you around your home for the first few days, as you won’t be able to bend or lift anything heavier than five pounds. You’ll need help with shopping, preparing meals, and caring for children. You should be able to go back to work after a week or two, if your work involves no strenuous activity.

After four to six weeks, you’ll be able to start getting back to more physical movement, beginning with lighter exercise and careful bending and lifting. You can then gradually build up to your normal level of activity, following Dr. Wilson’s advice.

Most patients have fully recovered by about two months after the surgery. You’ll see the full results of your mommy makeover after three or four months, once residual swelling has disappeared.

I originally went to see Dr. Wilson as a second opinion for an abdominoplasty I already had scheduled with another surgeon, but I left Dr. Wilson's office knowing I would have him perform my surgery. He was easy to talk to and very professional. I had Diastasis recti and a painful c-section scar after having two children. I am thrilled with my results after the surgery, and I'm feeling better than I ever have. My core is stronger, and I now have my confidence back. I would highly recommend Dr. Wilson and his staff to anyone, and I have!
