It happens to everyone eventually. One day you look in the mirror and notice a line that wasn’t there last week or an area of your body that didn’t sag yesterday quite like it is today. Aging is an inevitable part of life, and it comes with many little changes that can negatively impact the way you feel about yourself.

Two of the most common reasons people come to our practice are normal signs of aging in the face—wrinkles, sagging skin, cheek depressions—and stubborn pockets of fat that don’t seem to go away no matter how many calories they cut or hours they spend in the gym. Like wrinkles, the way your body accumulates and burns fat, or doesn’t burn it depending on how you look at it, has a lot to do with getting older. You tend to lose subcutaneous fat in the areas of your body that make you look and feel youthful while gaining it in the areas that aren’t very sexy. It’s sure doesn’t seem very fair.

Sometimes, the desire to smooth out signs of aging in the face and trim away unsightly pockets of body fat overlap, and we recommend a procedure for our patients called fat transfer, or fat grafting, for the face and body.

If you’re interested in learning how to slim trouble areas of your body while adding shape and volume where it can help you look more youthful, please contact AW Plastic Surgery at (603) 294-4526. If you have questions after reading a blog, you can also send us a message on our website.

What Is Fat Grafting for Your Face?

Plastic surgeons and aesthetic professionals use dermal fillers to help fill in areas of your face that have experienced a significant loss of bone density, structural proteins, such as collagen and elastin, and subcutaneous fat. Some of the most common areas in the face where we experience these consequences of getting older include the:

  • Cheeks
  • Temples
  • Areas around the mouth
  • Lips
  • Forehead

In addition to the hyaluronic acid based fillers, we use at AW Plastic Surgery to restore volume in these areas, we can also use a soft-tissue filler made from your own body fat that’s harvested from donor sites you’d love to see slimmed down a bit.

During a facial fat grafting procedure, we use liposuction to remove fat taken from areas of the body such as the:

  • Thighs
  • Sides
  • Hips
  • Buttocks
  • Belly

Excess fat cells are taken from these areas, spun in a centrifuge, and cleaned before they’re processed and turned into a potent dermal filler.

What Is Fat Grafting for Your Body?

Many people at some point look at themselves in the mirror and wish they could take fat from one area on their body and put it somewhere more attractive. The great news is that you can! Fat can be harvested from areas where you don’t want it, and it can be transferred to areas where you’d like a little more contour. Two of the most common areas of the body where people have fat added are the breasts and buttocks.

Like a fat transfer for the face, fat grafting for a breast augmentation can also help you turn back the clock and look more youthful. Transferring fat to these areas can subtly increase their volume, giving you a natural, non-surgical look and feel. The breasts and buttocks can be lifted in the process and shaped to provide more symmetry and overall harmony with other body features.

In addition to the face, breasts, and buttocks, fat can also be transferred to other areas that sag or lose their shape as you age, such as the hands and calves. It’s a versatile treatment for those who want to know all of their anti-aging options.
