Breast Lift

Image

Changes in breast shape are a normal part of aging. Weight fluctuations, pregnancy, and changes in skin composition can have a noticeable impact on the breasts. Over time, they can become flatter and more elongated in shape. These changes can affect a woman’s self-image and limit her choices in clothing.

Breast lift surgery, formally known as mastopexy, is used to correct the breast deflation that can follow pregnancy, menopause, or weight loss. Mastopexy can also be used to make the breasts more symmetrical, reduce nipple protrusion, and reduce the size of the areolas.

  • What is a Breast Lift?

Breast lift is a surgical procedure that improves the shape and projection of the breasts without making them larger. Patients who desire an increase in breast volume should opt for breast augmentation surgery instead. If you’re looking to enhance the size of your breasts and lift them to a more youthful position, a breast lift can be done along with breast augmentation/breast implants.

By removing excess breast skin and breast tissue and adjusting the curvature of the breasts, board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Anthony Wilson can correct even very advanced breast ptosis (sagging).

Mastopexy makes the breasts look fuller, rounder, and more pert without the use of implants. Furthermore, a breast lift can be customized to meet the individual needs of each patient. Dr. Wilson performs several types of breast lift surgery, each designed to treat a different grade of breast ptosis. This way, patients can select the option that can meet their cosmetic needs.

  • Who is a Good Candidate for a Breast Lift?

Breast lift surgery is ideal for women who want to restore the firmness of their breasts without increasing their breast size. Mastopexy patients should be prepared for a slight reduction in breast size owing to the removal of loose breast skin. However, despite this reduction in cup size, it’s not uncommon for the breasts to look fuller following a breast lift. By making the breasts rounder and placing them higher on the chest, breast lift surgery can create a fuller, balanced, and more youthful breast contour.

You may be a good candidate for breast lift surgery if:

      • You’ve noticed that the upper halves of your breasts appear flat rather than round.

      • Have nipples that sit low on the chest or point downward.

      • You’re looking to make your breasts more round.

      • You have asymmetrical breasts.

      • You’re in generally good health.

      • You’re a nonsmoker.

      • You have realistic expectations.

      • You are at a stable weight.

  • The Breast Lift Procedure

Dr. Wilson offers three different techniques for the breast lift procedure at AW Plastic Surgery. They include:

    The Crescent Lift

The crescent lift is used to treat low-grade ptosis; this technique is generally ideal for patients with smaller breasts. When performing a crescent lift, Dr. Wilson makes one incision around the upper half of each areola. This allows him to raise the nipple slightly and remove a small portion of excess skin from the upper half of the breast. Any scar tissue produced by this technique will be hidden by the natural ring of lighter tissue that surrounds the areola.

    The Lollipop Lift

The lollipop lift is the most common type of mastopexy. It’s capable of treating moderate to high-grade ptosis or sagging and involves one circular incision around each areola and one vertical incision down the underside of each breast.

    The Anchor Lift

The anchor lift permits the removal of a significant amount of loose skin. It’s, therefore, most suitable for larger breasts with a high-grade ptosis. During an anchor lift, Dr. Wilson adds a third incision to the standard lollipop incision pattern: He makes a circular incision around each areola, a vertical incision down each breast, and a horizontal incision within the breast crease.

No matter the type of breast lift technique you receive, the cosmetic procedure will begin with the administration of general anesthesia.

  • Recovery

The initial stages of recovery last about one week for patients who have had a crescent lift. Patients who have had a lollipop or anchor lift may need to rest for 10 to 14 days before they can return to work. All breast lift patients should avoid certain activities, like vigorous exercise and heavy lifting, for about four weeks after their surgery.

Dr. Wilson will provide you with detailed recovery instructions. He will also supply you with pain medication and supportive garments, like a surgical bra, before your procedure so you’re fully prepared for the healing process.

You may see some initial breast lift results immediately, but your full results will appear about a month or two after your surgery.

How do I know if I need a breast lift or breast augmentation in Portsmouth, NH?

Determining whether you need a breast lift (mastopexy) or breast augmentation depends primarily on your breast position and volume concerns. At AW Plastic Surgery in Portsmouth, we recommend a breast lift if your nipples point downward or sit below the breast crease, indicating significant sagging (ptosis). A simple self-test: if your nipple sits below the crease underneath your breast, a lift is likely needed. Breast augmentation, by contrast, is ideal when youre satisfied with your breast position but desire increased volume or size. Some Portsmouth patients benefit from combining both procedures—particularly those who have experienced volume loss and sagging after pregnancy, breastfeeding, or significant weight changes. During your consultation, our Portsmouth plastic surgeons will evaluate your breast tissue, skin elasticity, and nipple position to recommend the most appropriate procedure for achieving your aesthetic goals.

Can a breast lift correct asymmetrical breasts for Portsmouth women?

Yes, a breast lift at AW Plastic Surgery in Portsmouth is an excellent solution for correcting breast asymmetry, which is a common concern among women in New Hampshire. During the procedure, our plastic surgeons can adjust tissue amounts, nipple position, and breast shape differently on each side to create balanced, symmetrical results. For patients with significant size differences between breasts, combining a lift with selective augmentation or reduction techniques may provide optimal correction. Our customized approach allows us to address various forms of asymmetry, including differences in volume, nipple position, breast crease height, or breast shape. Many Portsmouth patients who previously felt self-conscious about uneven breasts report increased confidence in their appearance after undergoing a breast lift procedure designed to correct asymmetry.

What is the recovery process like after a breast lift procedure in Portsmouth?

Recovery after a breast lift at AW Plastic Surgery in Portsmouth typically follows a predictable timeline. Most patients experience some discomfort, swelling, and bruising during the first week, which can be managed with prescribed pain medication. Initially, youll wear a surgical support bra to reduce swelling and support your healing tissues. Most Portsmouth patients can return to desk jobs within one week, though you should avoid strenuous activities and heavy lifting for three to four weeks to prevent complications. While initial healing occurs rapidly, the final results of your breast lift will continue to refine as swelling resolves completely, typically over 2-3 months. Throughout your recovery period, our Portsmouth team provides comprehensive follow-up care to monitor your healing and ensure optimal results. Most patients find the temporary discomfort well worth the long-lasting improvement in breast position and shape.

Is it possible to breastfeed after having a breast lift in New Hampshire?

Many women who undergo a breast lift at AW Plastic Surgery in Portsmouth can successfully breastfeed afterward. Our surgical techniques are designed to preserve the milk ducts and glandular tissue whenever possible, maintaining the breasts natural function. However, its important to understand that some women may experience reduced breastfeeding capacity depending on the extent of the lift required and the specific technique used. If future breastfeeding is important to you, we recommend discussing this priority during your consultation at our Portsmouth office. Our surgeons can adjust their approach to maximize preservation of breastfeeding structures while still achieving your desired aesthetic improvement. For New Hampshire mothers who have already completed their families, this concern is less relevant when planning your breast lift procedure.
