Many of the patients at AW Plastic Surgery come to us worried about their sagging breasts or implants and whether that will affect their results after cosmetic breast surgery. That’s where an internal bra can come in. With this highly-effective technique, board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Wilson can help to support your breasts and ensure you receive the beautiful results you’re looking for.
What is the Internal Bra Technique?
The internal bra is not a type of surgery itself; it is a cutting-edge surgical technique often used during breast surgery. It works as a scaffold to support the lower portion of the breast to prevent sagging. It is performed alongside a breast lift, breast augmentation, and breast reconstruction. The implantable scaffold supports the breast tissue and/or implants and, during the healing process, will strengthen the scar tissue to aid in the breasts staying perky and in the correct position.
With an internal bra, bioabsorbable mesh or ADM (acellular dermal matrix) is used to create the supportive structure. Which type is right for you will depend on your anatomy and the results you’re looking for. If mesh is used, it will dissolve over time and be replaced with scar tissue.
Real patients. Real results.
VIEW GALLERYWho is a Good Candidate for an Internal Bra?
Good candidates for an internal bra are typically women with extremely heavy breasts, those who have lost a significant amount of weight and are having a breast reduction, lift, or breast augmentation surgery, and those who are worried about sagging (breast ptosis) over time. Women who struggle with stretched skin and deflated breasts from breastfeeding and are looking for breast augmentation can also be perfect candidates for an internal bra. Additionally, if your implants have moved or “bottomed out,” an internal bra can ensure your implants stay in the correct position.
During your consultation, Dr. Wilson will review your medical history, your concerns, and your goals to determine if the internal bra technique is right for you.
The Internal Bra Procedure
Typically, the internal bra technique is done as a part of a breast procedure. After incisions are made, the supportive mesh and scaffold are placed beneath the skin and within the breast tissue. Once in place, the mesh will be secured with several sutures to ensure it can reliably hold the breast tissue and/or the breast implant. No additional incisions are needed for the internal bra. Once in place, the breast surgery will continue, and incisions will be closed.

Beyond the usual after-effects of cosmetic breast surgery, you may notice some additional discomfort. Some patients with very thin skin may also feel the internal bra under the skin for six to twelve months. Once the mesh material is absorbed and replaced with scar tissue, you won’t be able to feel it any longer.
But beyond some discomfort, the internal bra will not affect the length of your recovery, but will improve the results of your breast surgery over time. An internal bra will also help your results last longer than if it wasn’t in place.
