What is Breast Augmentation?
Breast augmentation, also known as augmentation mammoplasty, is a surgical procedure designed to enhance the size and shape of the breasts. This is achieved through the placement of implants or fat transfer, depending on the desired outcome and patient preference.

- Saline Breast Implants: Filled with sterile salt water, these implants offer a uniform shape and firmness.
- Silicone Breast Implants: Filled with silicone gel, these implants feel more like natural breast tissue.
- Gummy Bear Implants: Form-stable implants that maintain their shape even if the shell breaks.
- Fat Transfer: Uses your own fat to enhance breast size, providing a natural alternative to implants.
-

The Breast Augmentation Procedure
Before surgery, Dr. Wilson will provide you with everything you’ll need to recover comfortably. You’ll be given a prescription for pain medication and a special compression garment or surgical bra to wear after your operation. You will need to wear this garment in place of a conventional bra to minimize swelling and speed up the healing process.
Breast augmentation surgery starts with the administration of general anesthesia. You’ll be asleep during your operation to ensure complete comfort.
Once you have been sedated, Dr. Wilson will make a small incision in each breast inside the inframammary fold. Placing incisions in the fold below the breast effectively hides any scarring beneath the natural overhang of the breast.
The implants are placed in a pocket directly below the pectoral muscle. This placement technique uses the muscle tissue to disguise the upper portion of the implant, preserving the natural slope of the breasts and stopping them from taking on an overly round look.
However, subglandular placement (where implants are inserted above the pectoral muscle) is sometimes a viable alternative for patients who have a substantial amount of natural breast tissue.
Here is what the process will look like:
- Consultation: During your initial consultation, Dr. Wilson will discuss your goals, review your medical history, and perform a physical examination. This is the perfect time to ask questions and explore your options.
- Customization: Based on your consultation, we will create a personalized surgical plan. This includes selecting your implant type, size, and placement or considering fat transfer options.
- Surgery: The procedure is performed under general anesthesia in our accredited surgical facility. Dr. Wilson uses precise techniques to ensure natural-looking results and minimal scarring.
- Recovery: You will receive detailed aftercare instructions after surgery. Most patients return to normal activities within a few weeks, and full recovery typically takes a few months.
- Follow-Up: We provide continuous support and follow-up appointments to monitor your progress and ensure your satisfaction.
-
Recovery
After you wake up from the breast implant procedure, you will feel tired and groggy due to the lingering effects of anesthesia. As such, you will need to have someone drive you home from the hospital. You should also ask someone to act as your caregiver for one to two days after your operation. You may find performing everyday tasks difficult during this period due to soreness and swelling.
Most patients report that they feel much better two days after surgery. At one week post-surgery, you’ll likely be able to return to work and engage in light activities. Vigorous activities, like exercise and lifting heavy objects, must still be avoided for another five weeks.
The AW team will arrange multiple follow-up appointments with you throughout your recovery in order to gauge your progress and ensure you’re comfortable and healing properly. When you have healed completely, he will let you know when you’re ready to exercise and do more intense activities again.
While you may see initial results a few weeks after surgery as the implants settle, it typically takes a few months for the final results to show up.

Breast Augmentation FAQs
How Do I Pick the Right Implants?
Implant selection is patient-specific. There are four factors to consider Shape, texture, size, and fill. The majority of breast augmentations in the United States are done with smooth, round implants. In most cases, Dr. Wilson uses smooth round implants, but in rare instances, a textured implant may be necessary to provide the ideal patient outcome. The size of an implant and the dimensions are based on the consultation and desired outcome. Patients generally choose silicone gel implants since they have a more natural feel.
Will There Be A Scar?
Yes. There is typically a 3 cm area of scar tissue placed under the breastfold that is easily hidden in clothing and bathing suits.
Will I Be Able to Breastfeed After Breast Augmentation?
Most patients can breastfeed after breast augmentation. There is no known risk to the baby.
Can an Implant Break? How Would I Know If It Did?
Implant shells can rupture. Different manufacturers quote different rates of implant rupture. Modern silicone implants are “cohesive,” meaning, unlike prior silicone implants, these implants do not leak but keep their form. An MRI can easily detect the rupture of a silicone implant if this is ever a concern. When saline implants rupture, the volume of the implant is lost. The saline is reabsorbed into the body without any consequence.
Can I Still Get Mammograms After Breast Implants Are Placed?
Yes! Mammograms are still possible following a breast augmentation. The mammogram technologist will perform special views to visualize the breast tissue.
Will Breast Implants Cause Cancer?
Currently, there is an ongoing investigation to determine the link between implants and a lymphoma known as ALCL. There is a correlation between textured implants and this form of cancer.
What Type of Breast Implant Looks and Feels Most Natural?
Silicone gel implants have the most natural feeling and appearance.
Will I Have Drains After Breast Augmentation?
Dr. Wilson does not use drains in his breast augmentations.
Will Sutures Need to Be Removed After Breast Augmentation?
All sutures are dissolving and will not need to be removed after your surgery.
How Long Will I Be Out of Work?
This depends on what you do for work. In general, patients with most office-type jobs can expect 4 to 7 days of downtime before returning to work. Patients with more physical jobs can expect closer to two weeks.
How Long Before I Can Exercise?
We recommend that you wait two weeks before you start light exercise. Light exercise includes activities that do not use your arms, such as treadmill walking, stationary bike, etc. At two to six weeks, you can start increasing your activities and then fully incorporate your arms into your activities.
Will My Nipple Lose Sensation?
Loss of nipple sensation is a very rare complication of breast augmentation. More often, there is an initial hypersensitivity of the nipple that persists for one or two months following the surgery and resolves as the implants settle into place and the skin stretches.
My Breasts Feel Tight After Surgery. Will I Hurt Something If I Move?
It is completely normal to have a tight feeling in the breasts following your surgery. It is okay to move and stay active, and, in fact, this is a good thing as it prevents blood clots and helps with the healing process.
Do I Need to Wear a Bra After Breast Augmentation?
We recommend you wear a bra following your augmentation to provide support to the implants and the healing tissues. You should not wear an underwire bra until six weeks have passed. This is to protect your incision.
Is This Operation Performed Under General Anesthesia?
Yes. This operation is performed under general anesthesia.
Does Someone Have to Stay With Me After Surgery?
Given that you will have pain medications and general anesthesia, we recommend that you have someone stay with you for the first 24 hours. You will also need a ride to and from the procedure center.
Will I Need My Breast Implants Replaced in The Future?
Most patients who undergo breast augmentation will, at some point, need a revision or exchange of their implants. There is no definitive lifetime to any implant; however, as your breast tissue and skin age, changes are often needed to preserve the natural look and position of the implant.
Types of Implants Available At AW Plastic Surgery
Dr. Wilson utilizes form-stable “gummy bear” breast implants (also called cohesive silicone gel implants).
Gummy bear implants are filled with a highly cohesive form of silicone gel that firmly maintains its shape. Like gummy bear candy, they maintain their shape perfectly, even when they’re cut in half. Gummy bear implants are available in both shaped and round forms. Teardrop-shaped implants more closely mimic the natural slope of the breast.
Gummy bear implants are favored by some patients because they’re excellent at retaining their shape over the course of many years; they’re also highly resistant to rippling and leakage.
