  • What is Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation, also known as augmentation mammoplasty, is a surgical procedure designed to enhance the size and shape of the breasts. This is achieved through the placement of implants or fat transfer, depending on the desired outcome and patient preference.

  • Types of Breast Implants

There are several types of breast implants available, each offering unique benefits depending on your goals and preferences:

    • Saline Breast Implants: Filled with sterile salt water, these implants offer a uniform shape and firmness.
    • Silicone Breast Implants: Filled with silicone gel, these implants feel more like natural breast tissue.
    • Gummy Bear Implants: Form-stable implants that maintain their shape even if the shell breaks.
    • Fat Transfer: Uses your own fat to enhance breast size, providing a natural alternative to implants.
  • Types of Implants Available At AW Plastic Surgery

Dr. Wilson offers a selection of high-quality implants tailored to your goals, including Motiva® implants and form-stable “gummy bear” breast implants (also called cohesive silicone gel implants).

    Motiva® Implants

Motiva® Implants are known for their advanced design and natural look and feel. They feature:

    • Ergonomix® technology that adapts to your body’s movement for a more natural aesthetic.
    • SmoothSilk®/SilkSurface® shell designed to promote biocompatibility and reduce inflammation.
    • TruMonobloc® structure, providing improved implant strength and flexibility.
    • Embedded Q Inside® Safety Technology, which enables implant verification and tracking with a scanner.

Motiva implants are a great option for patients seeking a softer, natural look with low complication rates and advanced safety features.

    Gummy Bear Implants

Gummy bear implants are filled with a highly cohesive form of silicone gel that firmly maintains its shape. Like gummy bear candy, they maintain their shape perfectly, even when they’re cut in half.

Gummy bear implants are available in both shaped and round forms. Teardrop-shaped implants more closely mimic the natural slope of the breast.

These implants are favored by some patients because they’re excellent at retaining their shape over the course of many years and are highly resistant to rippling and leakage.

  • Frequently Asked Questions About Breast Augmentation

Do breast implants cause autoimmune disease?

There is no data to state that they cause autoimmune disease. Some patients do not feel well after having a breast augmentation. It is unclear if it is directly related to the breast implants or secondary to other things such as normal aging.

    Are breast implants under warranty?

Breast Implants are under warranty. Every manufacturer has a different warranty. We utilize Sientra implants that have the best warranty in the industry.

Can breast implants cause pain years later?

Yes, sometimes breast implants can cause pain, usually secondary to the development of scar tissue. This can also happen later in life due to the deterioration of the shell of the implant.

Can I move my arms after breast augmentation?

Yes. We highly recommend returning to motion following a breast augmentation. We do not recommend repetitive motion for 6 weeks. But active use of arms leads to quicker recovery.

Can you breast feed after breast augmentation

Yes, however, not all patients can breastfeed, whether they have implants or not. There is no reason to believe that because of implants you are at a higher risk of being unable to breastfeed.

How do I prepare for breast implants?

Our practice has a thorough process for preparing a patient for their breast augmentation. This is a complex question as their are multiple decisions being make prior to going into surgery such as, size/shape of the implant, implant placement (above or below the muscle) and a blanket rec. would be inappropriate and contrary to our customized process.

Do breasts sag after breast augmentation?

Patients often get confused with implants & natural breasts. If you have natural breasts that are prone to sagging they can still sag with an implant and this is known as a waterfall defect. In some instances patients may require a lift at the time of implant placement or a lift down the road as their breasts age.

How do you know if you have capsular contracture?

Every patient has a capsule- a capsule is not always a capsular contracture as a capsule is just scar tissue around the implant. Capsular contracture is when the scar tissue is smaller than the implant which causes it to feel firm and hard around the implant, making the implant less soft.

How long are breast augmentation incisions sore?

Typically these are sore for less than one day.

Is breast enlargement possible without surgery?

There are some vacuum technology but we do not utilize those at our practice.

    What are cohesive breast implants?

Cohesivity refers to how glued together a substance it. So you have one extreme water (least cohesive) or ice (most). Gel implants that are cohesive can range from softer to firm and you want cohesivity that is in the middle for the most natural outcome & lower risk of leakage.

What can go wrong with breast implants?

The most common issues are scar tissue formation (capsular contracture) and implants can also displace over time.

Can breast implants last 30 years?

Yes, they can last 30 years and we see patients with older implants frequently. It is recommend that they are monitored throughout the years to confirm no complications.

Can fat be transferred to breasts?

Yes, fat can be transferred to the breasts. The difference between fat grafting vs. breast implants, is that fat grafting is not as predictable. Patients with expectations of certain outcomes may be disappointed by fat transfer. If the patient wants a modest outcome and the most natural look, this is a great option. You can pair both fat transfer and breast augmentation as a composite procedure. This is best for women who are incredibly thin with little to no skin and/or fat tissue to cover the implant.

Does getting breast implants make you gain weight?

No. The only actual weight you will gain is the weight of the implant itself. Some patients are concerned with looking larger after implant placement but that is due to the size and shape choice of implant.

How painful is breast augmentation recovery?

Breast augmentation pain varies from patient to patient. We typically perform these surgeries on Thursday or Friday and patients feel good by Monday.

    What are gummy bear implant?

Gummy bear implants are gel implants

Do you have to replace breast implants every 10 years?

No, these are guideline recommendations based on historical medical information. Some people have implants that last for 20 years while others have some that last for 4. Breast implants should always be monitored to confirm no complications.

    Does insurance cover breast implants?

Insurance covers the treatment of breast cancer which can sometimes include implant placement. Rarely will insurance cover congenital deformity or gender reassignment that involve implant placement. Insurance will never cover cosmetically placed implants.

How dangerous is breast augmentation surgery?

Its impossible to put a percentage or hard number to the risk. What we can say in our practice is the augmentation takes 30 minutes and we utilize anesthesia similar to that of a colonoscopy. Patients can expect to feel like their normal self within 24-48 hours with slight modifications to their daily routine to limit disruption to the pocket.

How do I know if my breast implant is leaking?

There are some signs of leaking implants such as hardening of scar tissue and/or increased pain. If the patient has saline implants, there may be volume decrease. Only way definitively determine a leak is if the implant is removed or an MRI is completed. An ultra sound can potentially show leaks but is not as accurate as a MRI.

how much does breast augmentation cost?

Breast augmentations have a range which reflects skill set and experience of your surgeons as well as demographics. Our practice costs are around $10k.

Is getting a breast augmentation worth it?

Breast augmentation is all about expectations. If you are self conscious about the size of your breasts then most likely your expectations will be met. If you are pursuing it for any other reason then you should reconsider other options such as a breast lift or fat grafting. Women that are post partum are often the most satisfied patients because the volume is able to be restored.

Is there an alternative to breast implants?

Yes, fat grafting or auto-augmentation which is rearrangement of a patients breast tissue to add volume.

What is the most common breast implant size?

The most common implant size is around 350cc.

How do I choose the right breast implant size and type for my Portsmouth breast augmentation?

When selecting implants for your breast augmentation at AW Plastic Surgery in Portsmouth, NH, we consider your frame, proportions, and desired outcome. During your consultation, our board-certified plastic surgeon will take detailed measurements to determine the implant size that will look most natural on your body. We offer "sizers" that allow you to experience how different implant volumes feel before making your decision. We offer silicone implants, which provide a softer, more natural feel. We encourage patients to bring photographs showing their desired results to help communicate their aesthetic goals.

How long is the recovery after breast augmentation surgery in Portsmouth?

Recovery after breast augmentation at AW Plastic Surgery in Portsmouth typically involves several phases. Most patients can return to desk jobs within about one week following their procedure. You'll likely need to wear a surgical compression bra for thernfirst week to reduce swelling and support the healing process. Light activities can be resumed gradually, but you should avoid strenuous exercise for approximately three weeks after your breast enhancement surgery. While initial healing occurs within these first few weeks, it's important to understand that the final results of your breast augmentation won't be visible until the implants have fully settled, which typically takes about six to twelve weeks. During your recovery in the Portsmouth and Dover area, our team will provide comprehensive post-operative instructions and support to ensure optimal healing.

Can I breastfeed after getting breast implants in New Hampshire?

Yes, most women who undergo breast augmentation at AW Plastic Surgery in Portsmouth can successfully breastfeed after their procedure. Our surgical techniques are designed to preserve the milk ducts and glandular tissue, minimizing impact on future breastfeeding ability. The placement of incisions and implants is carefully planned to avoid disrupting the breast's natural function. During your consultation in our Portsmouth office, we'll discuss your future plans for breastfeeding so we can tailor your breast enhancement procedure accordingly. It's important to share any plans for pregnancy with your surgeon, as this information helps us develop the most appropriate surgical approach for your long-term needs and goals.

How long do breast implants last, and when might I need breast implant replacement?

While breast implants don't have a specific expiration date, they are not considered lifetime devices. At AW Plastic Surgery in Portsmouth, we generally advise patients that implants may need replacement approximately every 10 years. Various factors can influence this timeline, including implant type, body changes, and personal preferences. Some women experience complications like capsular contracture (excessive scar tissue around the implant), implant rupture, or simply desire a change in size or type of implant. Regular check-ups with your Portsmouth plastic surgeon are important for monitoring your implants' condition. Many patients in the New Hampshire seacoast area who initially received breast augmentation later opt for implant replacement, removal, or revision surgery as their bodies and aesthetic goals evolve over time.

What are Motiva breast implants and are they right for me?

Motiva implants are a modern option known for their natural movement, smooth surface, and advanced safety features. They may be ideal if you’re looking for implants that feel soft, reduce the risk of complications, and adapt to your body. During your consultation, Dr. Wilson can help you decide whether Motiva or another implant style best fits your goals.

My experience with Anthony and his staff was fabulous. From the moment I walked into the office, I was greeted, and treated like royalty. The level of professionalism was spot on. From day one, my interactions with Anthony and his nursing and administrative staff increased my confidence and trust that I was choosing the right surgeon. All my questions and concerns were answered, and I was never made to feel uncomfortable. My face looks amazing. My eyes brightly shine on my face and my lift has made me feel and look years younger. Thank you all for an amazing three months. Unfortunately, I probably won’t see you again because this face is going to last me a lifetime.
