As we age and are exposed to the sun and the natural aging process, different skin imperfections can build up. Everything from lines and wrinkles to dark spots can mar your skin. But with the help of BBL, you can say goodbye to these imperfections and hello to glowing and healthy skin.
What is BBL?
BBL (which stands for broadband light) therapy is not a laser treatment. It’s a non-invasive treatment that uses intense pulsed and broad-spectrum light to address a number of skin concerns. Also, because we can personalize the wavelength of the light, our team can customize your treatment to your needs.
BBL can address sun damage, hyperpigmentation, unwanted blood vessels, lines and wrinkles, and more. It works on the face, but also the neck, chest, arms, and hands. And unlike a laser treatment, it can treat larger areas of the face and body for quicker treatment times and fewer sessions.
At AW Plastic Surgery, all BBL treatments are performed by our experienced nurse practitioners who specialize in advanced light and laser technologies.
Who is a Candidate for BBL?
Most patients who are struggling with skin imperfections (including lines and wrinkles) are good candidates for BBL. That said, it’s best on lighter skins. It can cause hyperpigmentation in patients with darker skin.
On top of that, there are some other criteria we follow to determine if BBL is right for you, including the following:
- In good overall health
- No pregnant or breastfeeding
- Have realistic expectations of treatment
- Don’t have a history of skin cancer
The BBL Procedure
Before you come in for your BBL procedure, we recommend avoiding tanning and excess sun exposure for at least two weeks. BBL works best on lighter skin tones, and tanning can negatively affect your results.
To start, we’ll cleanse the treatment area. Since discomfort is very minimal with BBL, a topical anesthetic is typically not needed. Once the area is clean, your provider will use a handheld wand to deliver the light energy to the upper layers of the skin. Since the light is so bright, we will provide you with protective eyewear.
At most, you may feel a slight warmth or tingling sensation. Depending on the size of the treatment area, your session could take anywhere from 10-25 minutes. For most patients, we recommend approximately three sessions spaced 4-6 weeks apart for optimal results.
Aftercare
There is very little downtime with BBL. You will be able to go back to your normal routine (including wearing makeup) the same day as your treatment. If you are treating brown spots, those will become darker in the week following treatment, but they will eventually fall away. Avoid picking them before they fall off.
We also recommend you avoid excess sun exposure after treatment.
As for results, you may see some initial improvements immediately, but most results take a few days to a couple of weeks to become fully visible. Many patients need multiple treatments for optimal results.
