Whether you’re looking to shed a few pounds and slim down, drop a couple of dress or pant sizes, or throw away an unhealthy habit for good, we’re rooting for you at AW Plastic Surgery! New Year’s resolutions can be a powerful tool to help align your lifestyle and goals with something you’ve always wanted to achieve. For those of you out there using 2019 to get the perfect, toned stomach, tight buttocks, or definition you’ve always wanted, we’d like to tell you a little about EMSCULPT®, an FDA-approved, non-invasive body contouring treatment.

What is EMSCULPT®?

The way we gain and lose body fat is pretty unfair. Our bodies quickly accumulate body fat in core areas (stomach, butt, and chest), which is a leftover evolutionary trait that helped us survive in harsher living conditions. These same core areas where fat piles on and looks flabby are one of the last places our body will shed fat. To make it even more unfair, stress, genetics, and gender—factors over which we often have little or no control—all play a role in where your body will accumulate and stubbornly hold on to fat cells.

Many of our patients come to us frustrated. They’ve tried excessive dieting—keto, paleo, fasting, you name it—and they work out regularly. They’re doing everything right, but they can’t seem to shake off that last little pocket of fat on their stomach or other core area. EMSCULPT® is often that last little thing, the final ingredient in their lifestyle that helps them achieve the last push toward their ideal physique. EMSCULPT® is a comfortable, quick, affordable way to shape the body by supercharging the effect you’d get from doing a massive amount of core and gluteal exercises.

EMSCULPT® can be complementary to injectables and surgical body contouring treatments, or it can be an attractive alternative. EMSCULPT® uses high intensity focused electromagnetic (trademarked as HIFEM®) energy delivered via a set of comfortable paddles to cause your abdominal and gluteal muscles to contract. Think of it as basically doing thousands of crunches or body weight squats in about a half hour. Muscle contractions caused by EMSCULPT® make your body rapidly build lean muscle mass, burn fat faster, and shape your body in targeted areas. According to the manufacturer, EMSCULPT® has an average fat reduction of 19% at targeted sites and a 16% average increase of lean muscle mass. It’s a healthy, safe way to quickly slim and tighten some of the areas where body fat is most stubborn.

One of the major benefits of EMSCULPT® for most patients is how convenient it is. Unlike surgery, most patients can immediately go back to their regular day-to-day activities and work schedules. One of the only effects they’ll feel after treatments is a soreness similar to what you’d feel after a good workout.

CoolSculpting® vs. EMSCULPT®? What’s the Difference?

EMSCULPT® and CoolSculpting® are both non-invasive, FDA-approved non-surgical body contouring treatments. They’re both designed to shape and tone your body quickly and safely, and both will reduce body fat, but the way they achieve body fat loss is very different.

CoolSculpting® uses a process called cryolipolysis to destroy fat cells below the skin’s surface without damaging healthy surrounding tissues. Cryolipolysis is literally freezing the fat cells so they metabolize and break down and eventually exit the body through its own normal functions.

EMSCULPT® uses pulses of energy to do exactly the same thing that happens when you work out, but the effect is like doing thousands of exercises in a single session. EMSCULPT® treatments are less focused on destroying fat cells specifically, and more focused on quickly building muscle tone. The effect of more muscle tone on your abs and buttocks is similar to what you might expect from liposuction on the abs. Your skin will appear tighter, you’ll display more definition, and your buttocks will be firm and lifted. An added bonus of having more muscle mass is also having a higher base metabolic rate, which means you’re burning calories and losing body fat faster when you exercise or even just go about your day as normal.
